Preparing your children for a sunset session
Capturing beautiful moments with your children during a sunset photo session can create cherished memories that will last a lifetime. As a mum to a very sassy five-year-old, I know it can also be a little stressful to take your kids out of routine and especially in the early evening. To make the most of this special day, a little preparation can go a long way. Here are some tips to help you prepare your children for a successful sunset photo session.
The number one thing to do is let go of any expectations or pressure.
Focus on being fully present with your children, soaking in the beauty of the surroundings, and embracing the joy of the experience. By being relaxed and enjoying the moment yourself, you create a positive and fun atmosphere that encourages your children to be themselves and have a great time.
To ensure your children are excited about the upcoming session, involve them in the planning process. Discuss the activity and its purpose and let them know how much fun they'll have. By involving them, you can build anticipation and make them feel valued, leading to a more enjoyable experience. I always love to practice some cute interactions with my little one leading up to a shoot — like touching noses, forehead kisses or cuddles from behind.
Show up ready to play, have fun with your children, explore with them, throw them in the air, cuddle and smother them with kisses. Let your little one’s adventure and just surrender to the process, relax and enjoy it!
Full bellies = happy kids, so it’s a good idea to feed them before the session and bring along some snacks for the car ride home. I am all for bribery, so if you need to bring some treats to pass out along the way, feel free. Just make sure they are small bite sized snacks that won’t get messy.
Dress your kids appropriately for the weather. If it’s colder, make sure everyone is dressed warmly. Layers are great as they can be easily removed or put back on during the session. Comfortable clothing is also essential for children to feel at ease and move freely. If we are heading to an area with water, bring towels and a change of clothes. A change of clothes is always a good idea in case something happens.
Family photo shoots are not about perfection because life with kids never is. Being a parent is messy, chaotic, exhausting and yet the most heart expansive and beautiful journey we can ever embark on. So, don’t worry if hair isn’t perfect, or clothes get a little wet, or your little one just wants to cling to you for the whole shoot. Please enjoy this time together as a family. I just know you will love the end result!
